Process
1. Initial Reaction and Safety Protocol:
a. Remain calm and pull over to a safe location as soon as it is safe to do so.
b. Turn on hazard lights to signal to the officer that you are acknowledging their presence.
c. If driving on a highway, use an exit ramp or a wide shoulder to pull over. If on a city street, find a safe spot to stop away from traffic.
d. Ensure that the vehicle is in park (or neutral gear for manual transmission) and turn off the engine. Place both hands on the steering wheel in plain sight to demonstrate compliance and to reduce officer’s concern.
2. Communication with Officer:
a. Greet the officer respectfully when they approach the vehicle.
b. Provide all necessary documents requested promptly and without hesitation, including:
i. Driver's License
ii. Commercial Driver's License(CDL) and/or DOT Medical Certificate
iii. Vehicle Registration
iv. Proof of Insurance
c. Inform the officer of any actions you intend to take, such as reaching for documents or opening compartments, to avoid misunderstandings.
3. Cooperation and Compliance:
a. Follow the officer's instructions calmly and without argument.
b. Avoid making sudden movements or reaching for objects not requested by the officer.
c. If asked to exit the vehicle, do so slowly and with caution, keeping your hands visible.
4. Documentation and Follow-up:
a. If issued a citation or warning, accept it calmly, and do not argue with the officer on the roadside.
b. Take note of the officer's name, badge number, and any relevant details for your records.
c. Contact your supervisor or Fleet Manager to inform them of the incident and provide them with details.
d. A copy of the citation or warning will be sent to Human Resources to be placed in the
driver’s employee file.
e. The driver will follow up with any required actions, such as attending court hearings or paying fines, to resolve the issue.
By adhering to this SOP, commercial vehicle drivers can ensure a safe, professional, and compliant interaction with law enforcement during traffic stops. Regular training and reinforcement of these procedures are essential for maintaining preparedness and promoting a positive relationship between drivers and law enforcement authorities.
